We also welcome contributions which we will add to this page.

Natural History

Acacia robusta leaf

Photo: Norman Baines

A worksheet on "learning about leaves" which gives an idea of a focussed activity which can be planned for a school visit. The worksheet also gives some suggestions about follow-up activities like exploring the common names of trees in some of South Africa's official languages. There is also a teacher's guide with more technical information. The worksheet is only available in MS Word format, and because of the illustrations may take some time to load.

Natural History

Mothcatcher

Photo: Wendy Carstens

A worksheet on Invasive Alien plants. This worksheet may possibly be more useful in the the suburbs than on the Melville Koppies, because we spend a lot of energy eradicating them, and most can only be found on the remoter parts of the Koppies, if at all. But the worksheet gives kids a chance to look critically at the neighbours' gardens... or even the school grounds. The MS Word document has embedded photos so it may take some time to download. The preview will load more quickly and contains links to larger versions of the photos. (Text and photos - Wendy Carstens)
